The ideal candidate is looking for a long-lasting career within the Fire Prevention Bureau and will perform a full array of fire inspection and prevention duties with an emphasis in weed abatement and vegetation. This recruitment will fill 1 full-time/benefitted vacancy and establish an eligibility listing for future needs.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
Fire Inspector I is the entry-level class in the fire inspector series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform residential and commercial inspections and prevention duties of a more routine nature, perform duties for weed abatement, as well as learn City policies, California Building/Fire Codes and specific methods and techniques for assigned areas of responsibility. This classification may alternatively be staffed with Fire Inspector II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level class.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed both in an office and outdoors. The incumbent in this position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The position entails working in situations that may expose the employee to fumes or airborne particles, electrical shock or mechanical hazards. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, drive motorized vehicles and often work with interruptions.

Work in this position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift and transport equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required.

Education:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience:
  • 2 years of experience dealing with the public, including identifying and resolving problems is required.
License and/or Certificate:
  • Possession of a valid Class C California State Driver's License is required at the time of hire.
    • Possession of a valid equivalent is acceptable during the application process.
