The Saint Paul Fire Department protects the life and property of the people of Saint Paul. As a Saint Paul Fire Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), you will be responsible for:

  • Providing basic life support for emergency and non-emergency medical transportation services throughout the City of Saint Paul.
  • Working as part of the Emergency Medical Service in the Fire Department, responding to 9-1-1 Basic Life Support (BLS) emergency calls or calls as requested by Saint Paul Fire Advanced Life Support (ALS) personnel.
  • Providing rehabilitation care to firefighters onsite and during emergency operations and training exercises.
  • Recording and compiling data generated by EMS incidents through patient care reports.
  • Continuing medical education and training, to include meeting State of Minnesota standards.

Information Specific to this Position:

EMT's will work 8-12 hour rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Employees also receive a 6.25% night differential rate for any hours worked between 6 PM and 6 AM. EMT's will go through a 2 week classroom academy, 1 week of ALS ride alongs, and 4-6 weeks on the job training. Starting rate is negotiable based on experience. Paramedics are strongly encouraged to apply.

The EMT position serves as a pathway to becoming a Saint Paul Firefighter once qualifying employees meet City promotional rights after 2 years of service. More information on City promotional rights may be found here.

  • Must be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a current State of Minnesota and National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or paramedic certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License, or equivalent out-of-state driver's license.

Assessment: Qualifications Rating

The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application and answers to the Supplemental Questionnaire. GENERAL INFORMATION:

Open Job Posting: This posting is open to anyone who meets the position requirements.

Eligible Lists: Eligible lists are typically created from a pass/fail assessment. Those who pass the assessment will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months. Hiring Managers may interview/hire anyone from the list.

Final Selection Process: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.

Pre-Employment Screening: This position will require a medical examination, psychological assessment, driver's license check, drug test, National Registry Emergency Medical Technician and State of Minnesota EMT certification check, and a background check which may include criminal history and employment history as a condition of employment.
